Text: Adonis (aka Ali Ahmad Said Esber)

Extract from the poem Beginnings of the Body, Ends of the Sea by Adonis, translated by Khaled Mattawa from Adonis: A Selection, from Yale University Press

The sea is a force in us.
The sea is in your mouth and the sea is the moon’s hand and the sea
wraps round us
and in the sea is our being.
And we rise from the sea and we rise with the sea and we turn in the sea and the sea winds round us and we rise
and the sea rises with us.

Extract from the poem On Behalf of the Path from Mihyar the Damascene by Adonis, translated by Kareem James Abu-Zeid and Ivan Eubanks

On behalf of my path adorned with waves and mountains,
On behalf of my face filled with echoes, I snuffed thousands of skyborne white candles, I told my teeth and blue nails
To give way with me and surrender
To the roaring waves,
I told them to cut the ropes
That bound me to the final shore —
I have no limits, I have no final shore.
