Duration: c. 5’30”

Text: Two poems, one by 21st century Norfolk poet Esther Morgan and the other by 17th century Bolognese poet Alessandro Francucci.

Themes: Sisterhood, convent life, sacrifice, love, grace, beauty.

Musical content: The two poems are intertwined in a texture that resonates with 16th century idioms. Textures alternate between a lyrical cantus firmus with imitation above and homophony with bright chordal harmonies. The range of the singers extends down to F3 in the altos and up to B5 in the sopranos.

Suitable for: professional or able amateur upper voice choirs

The Veiled Sisters was commissioned by Laurie Stras for Musica Secreta for their 2022 album ‘Mother, Sister, Daughter”. The first performance was given in Kings Place on 10th June 2022.
