Delightful news this week: my piece, Batter My Heart, has been nominated for a prestigious Ivor Novello Composer Award. The piece is a setting of John Donne’s powerful sonnet and was written to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the dedication of Lincoln’s Inn Chapel, where Donne served as Dean from 1621 until his death in 1631. Some of you may remember that I wasn’t able to attend the premiere, but I was delighted when Nicholas Shaw and the choir kindly performed it again on 3rd March this year. It was a special moment to have this second performance, and I’m grateful to everyone involved. You can find more about this piece, its first performance, and how it translates Donne’s intense emotions into a musical landscape here, and the score is here.
