Alan Ahlberg's Polite Children is a terrific account of children retrieving their football from the neighbour's garden where it landed and caused utter mayhem: fire-brigade, vets, doctors and flooded lawns involved. The setting is rhythmic, punchy and memorable.

The Greedy Alligator is a setting of a simple rhyming verse by Colin West that develops the story of a pet alligator that eats its owner's younger sister. But fortunately the alligator gets indigestion and regrets his ways- so an excellent moral tale. The music develops from a single repeated phrase and is is easy to learn in three parts.

A helpful explanation as to why single socks disappear is found in this jazz setting of The Missing Sock by Roger McGough. Guaranteed to bring out smiles all round. Catchy melody and finger-clicking grooviness.

Why did the chicken? by John Mole is musically the most challenging piece in the set. The song explores scratchy pecking musical textures and allows the chicken the opportunity to turn back and avoid a lifetime of jokey references to crossing roads.

The final piece in the set is The Bedbugs Are Throwing A Party. Essentially a musical romp to charm audiences by inviting them to be both guest of honour and dinner at the bedbugs' midnight feast.
